Belgaum : . There was a discussion that immediately after the election of the mayor on February 6, the proposal for the standing committee election would be sent by the municipality to the regional commissioner.
Out of 58 corporators in the municipality, except for 3 corporators, all corporators are freshers. Therefore, the officers will have to exercise in the standing committee meeting. The standing committee elections were held under the chairmanship of the Regional Commissioner. The proposal to hold this election is sent by the Municipal Corporation to the Regional Commissioner. However, when asked about this to the council department of the municipality, it is said that the proposal for holding the standing committee election has not been sent yet.
There are four standing committees in the Municipal Corporation. All four standing committees are important. Many important decisions are taken by those committees. The approval of the collection and expenditure of the Municipal Corporation has to be taken from the Standing Committee. That is why every standing committee meeting is held once in a month. Moreover, disgruntled corporators in the mayor-deputy mayor elections are removed by giving the post of standing committee chairman. Till 2010, standing committee elections were held only on the day of Mayor-Deputy Mayor elections. But from 2011 this responsibility was given to Regional Commissioner. Since then, standing committee elections are held within a week after the mayoral election, but this time it has not been done. Since the BJP has a complete majority in the Municipal Corporation, will the BJP dominate the Standing Committees in the elections? Such a question has been raised.
Bhagyashree Huggi, Deputy Commissioner of Administration, is currently holding the important post of Council Secretary. Therefore, the council department will send a proposal to the regional commissioner only after Huggie’s instruction, but it has been learned from Huggie that the council department has not yet been instructed in this regard.
