Due to non-supply of milk powder to the Department of Women and Child Welfare, more than 5 lakh children including pregnant and child-bearing women in Belgaum district have to be deprived of milk and due to this there is a lack of nutrition in women and children.
To prevent malnutrition, milk is distributed to pregnant women and children under Kshirbhagya Yojana by the state government. For this, milk powder is distributed to Anganwadi centers. According to the Women and Child Welfare Department, every Anganwadi needs at least 3 kg milk powder per month. But since last October, not even 1 kg of milk powder has been distributed. Due to this, dissatisfaction is being expressed and the demand for women and child welfare department to take immediate steps in this regard is increasing.
The total number of milk beneficiaries in the district is 5 lakh 7 thousand 466. This includes (according to section and number respectively) children aged 1 to 3 years – 2 lakh 8 thousand 891, children aged 3 to 6 years – 2 lakh 1 thousand 855, pregnant women – 48 thousand 931, pregnant women 47 thousand 899.
