Mysore: Addanda Kariappa, the author of Tipu’s play True Dreams and director of Rangayana, said that the play has won. Speaking to reporters on Thursday, he said that the writ petition filed by SDPI activist B.S. Rafi Ullah in the High Court seeking ban on Tipu’s Real Dreams play has been withdrawn.
In his petition, Rafi Ullah alleged that Tipu Sultan was insulted in the play, holy Azaan was used in the play and Muslims were being hurt and creating unrest in the society by calling Muslims as Turks in the play.
After the complaint, the court ordered a ban on the sale of the book but allowed the play to be performed. A play was staged across the state, which received an unprecedented response from the audience, he said.
He said that he has submitted every document to the court to justify the elements used in the play. He made it clear that no disrespect was shown except that Azaan was used as a prayer just like Ganapati Stotra and Bhajan are used in dramas. The tradition of calling Muslims Turks is in use everywhere. He said it was made clear to the court that it was not a term used to insult the community.
He said that he has submitted documents to the court that through historical evidence, Tipu Sultan was a king and not a freedom fighter. In the drama he has shown another side of Tipu. He produced historical evidences related to the conversion of Kodava and Mangalore Christians, the killing of Melukote Iyengar and the destruction of many temples including Hampi.
He said that he had convinced the court that Tipu was a Muslim and that he was not a representative of Muslims. He said the petitioner had withdrawn the writ petition before the judgment so the drama was won.
