Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court will hear a public interest petition seeking a ban on the screening of the film ‘Adipurush’ in the state on June 27.
Calcutta High Court lawyer Debdeep Mondal filed the petition.
In the petition, Mondal’s lawyer Tanmay Basu said that although the film was inspired by the great Indian epic Ramayana, the events depicted in the mythological epic were actually distorted in the film. The petitioner alleged that the film director mixed sexual innuendos with the subject of the film.
Lawyers point out that similar demands have been raised to ban the screening of the film not only in India but also in Nepal.
A similar PIL has been filed in the Rajasthan High Court seeking a ban on the film’s screening. Akhil Bharatiya Hindu Mahasabha has recently lodged an FIR at Hazratganj Police Station in Lucknow.
All India Cine Workers Association (AICWA) has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to ban the screening of ‘Adipurush’. The Samajwadi Party (SP) and the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) have joined hands against the film, demanding a ban and an apology from its makers.
