Belgaum : As several districts of north Karnataka including Belgaum and Kalburgi face acute drinking water shortage in May, the state government has requested the Maharashtra government to release three TMC of water each in Krishna river. Due to this, a request has also been made to supply drinking water to the citizens of Bhima Tira.
Rakesh Aying, Deputy Chief Secretary, Water Resources Department, Karnataka, has written a letter to the Deputy Chief Secretary, Water Resources Department, Maharashtra on August 15. In North Karnataka, the districts of Belgaum, Vijaypur, Bagalkot, Kalburgi, Raichur, Yadgiri have experienced scarcity of drinking water in early summer.
3 TMC additional water should be released from Warna/Koyna Reservoir in Maharashtra State to Krishna river to avoid shortage of drinking water for citizens and livestock due to depletion of water storage in Hippargi Barrage in the state.
Also, 3 TMC of water should be released in Bhima river from Ujani reservoir in Maharashtra. Therefore, from the point of view of humanity, Rakesh Singh has requested in the letter that a total of six TMC of water should be released in the months of May and June so that citizens and animals can get drinking water.
